Changing my own oil

what stops something from snagging on the Fumoto drain valve and drain all the oil??? our oil is too expense to waste it if that happens. Not to mention maybe seizing the motor!!!

Another vote for the fumoto drain valve. Those things are great. I use Rotella syn 5w-40 in the truck year round. It helps it start easier and run smoother than conventional 15w-40. And I always use the OEM oil filter, the after market ones that I've tried always tool about twice as long to built oil pressure upon startup. Just didn't seem like a good thing to me.

agreed on the OEM filters...but you can compare 'em side by side
motorcraft & fram when your in wall mart...theyre EXACTLY the same...

Follow the F2500 link in my sig for a pic: If you are driving a 4x4 the front axle will take the hit before the valve is ever touched. If it did take a serious hit? you would be more likley to bend the oil pan and leave the fumoto intact. I say this because when you tighten the fumoto or any other fitting to the pan you can see the oil pan flexing.

My opinion: the fumoto is tougher than your oil pan.

ahhhh 7.3L vs 6.0L and im using Rotella 15w40.
might have to look at that Travellers stuff...is it CI - 4 PLUS spec ?

I guess I am the only one using the expensive stuff (amsoil). I service usually 5,000-10,000 miles. Whenever I find time between the range I mentioned. I use a napa filter, but I am considering the amsoil filter to prolong oil changes.

Thanks for all of your help...I think I am pretty well decided on changing my own oil. I have done it before on my small cars but neither of the two I owned were more than 2.0L engines, so I got a little nervous with the big diesel.

So 14 quarts is what I am looking at getting rid of....any ideas on places that take that for free?

anyone that services cars...i take mine to walmart...least amount
of hassel...autozone, pepboys etc should all take it...or take it
to a jiffy lube and dump it.

places up north & east like to take the old crap, cause they burn it
to heat their shops usually.

I have some old 5gal jugs...i transfer the old oil <caught in my catch pan>
to the 5gallon jugs and then haul that to the wally mart.

i havce a 15 or so quart catch pan, using my fomoto valve i drain some off,
then stop and dump it into my 5gal jug...then i go back and open the valve
and finish draining the oil off...i dont wanna deal w/ trying to slide 15 quarts around
or risk overflowing...the drain valve is GREAT for this.

I kept the 4 empty 1 gallon jugs in my shed. Upon oil changing time, I get out the old jugs, loosen the oil cap (lets oil drain from filter into engine), the climb under the truck and fill 1 jug at a time with the fumoto valve. It makes it easy to handle on the way to autozone to dump. I can do the entire oil change and not spill a drop anywhere. Plus I don't have a messy catch pan to keep around, just the 4 clean empty jugs.
