Is my logic correct?
I travel about 25,000 miles per year and now have a 2006 F350 w/4:10 gears (see sig) with using a fuel cost of $4.00 per gallon I was looking for fuel mileage improvements and ROI (Return On Investment) Since buy this F350 about 4 weeks ago I have logged 2,755 miles with 645 towing a 10K TT. The balance is 2.110 miles w/o towing. The w/o towing fuel mileage is 13.57. with a projected yearly cost for fuel being $7,369.19 @ $4.00 per gallon. I could make a 2.0 MPG improvement my yearly cost would be $946.59.

I would like to have a ROI payback within the first year so my question is What chip or other improvement would get 2.0+ MPG for a cost of less than $ 473.29? This is half of my projected fuel cost and payback in one year.

In short. None.

You cant hardly even get into a tuner for under $500.00 and a tuner probably wont net you a consistent 2.0+ mgp gain.

Best advice I can give you..... slow'er down about 5-10 mph if you want FREE mpg increases.

youd get a faster ROI using less pressure with your
rght foot than you EVER will w/ any MOD.

the only significant mpg improvement youll see is
from an overdrive box (gear vendors etc).

many years ago, when diesel was 20cents LESS
per gallon <than gasoline> it took 60k miles just to
break even on the cost of the diesel engine upgrade.

I had looked at overdrive units ($3000+/-) with 4:10 gears this would equal a 15% year improvement in MPG or 2.03 MPG increase. At this cost it would take 3 years of 2.03 MPG improvement to break even before you would see any ROI.

'bout the same time frame that youll see from a chip too...
you could always re-gear...imagine what a 3.55 would net you...
and that should run you no more than about 1200 WORST case.

Ken, I will say that with only 24K miles on the truck right now that you should see some improvement in mileage over the next 10K or so. I have no troubles getting 16-17 with mine, though I believe I have 3:73 gears and I also have the 20" wheel package which helps in keeping RPM's under 2K at 70.

I've gotten into the habit of setting the cruise by rpm's instead of vehicle speed and it makes a big difference. @1700-1750 it puts me right at 59-61 mph and I can't believe the difference in mpg. [providing I don't have a caliper dragging ]

I tow a 10K TT from time to time the 3:55 would not work. I had a 7.3 PSD "X" that pushed the limits of the "X" when towing but a 218K avergae of over 15.3 MPG would like to get back into this area.

I had the believe that with 6.0 and 5 speed auto that the F350 fuel mileage would equal or better my old "X" 7.3. Finger are crossed.
Also way back when the "X" was new the thinking was the engine never was broken in until it towed a few miles. Now my 6.0 has only towed 10K TT for about 650 miles hopefully I will see an improvement.
