Hey guys just purchased a obs power stroke (94). I was changing the fuel pump after diagnosing the truck( no start) with some friends and doing random searches on this site. Anyways while I was installing the new pump I managed to drop the rod that runs the fuel pump into the motor. Any help and advice of what to do to get it out would be much appreciated. Hopefully I'm not the only idiot that has done this.

Thank You
Marco

the only "help" i could offer would be to go get one of those strong magnets that are attatched to a 2' thick aluminum wire, and go fishing.

Local shop here in town once told me that when they drop one they go get a new one and let the old one lay in the bottom of the pan. I would not like having it in the pan but the alternative is pulling the engine so you can remove the pan and get it out. Before I fired it up I think I might pull the drain plug and rock the truck around so that I could get a visual conformation that it did in fact make it down to the pan.

make damn sure that it is in the pan!!!!!!!!!as long as it is in the pan you will be fine, but it also has to get past the baffle and drop down to the very bottom.you can get it out without yankin the motor.on the passengers side of the pan you will see what looks like a huge nut where the dipstick goes.drain the oil.pull the tube out .get a piece of fairly flexible wire like mechanics wire.make a hook on on end and stick it into the hole where the dipstick tube went into.make sure you get a godd hook on the piece in there.remove the big nut and let the big piece drop into the pan.this is the reason for the hooked wire,so you can get it back up and put the nut back on it when your done.now use a magnet on a flexible rod and go fishing.you should be able to catch it and get it out of the big hole.get a new oring for the tube adapter and put it all back together.now im gonna suggest that instead of getting a new oring that you get a tube of the grey rtv from ford or international.clean the tube adapter groove real well with brake parts cleaner as well as the back side of the pan wwhere this piece goes.put a nice thick bead on the adapter in the groove where the oring goes.put it back together quick as the rtv sets up in about 5 minutes.once the rtv is cured you will almost never get it back apart and it will never leak like they always do.

ill go see if i can find my thread here with pictures of my pan so you know what im talkin about.you know, pictures are worth a thousand words!

here ya go.i circled the adapter.you can fish through there and get the piece out.if you look closely you can see some rtv smeared around the edge of it.even if it loosens up like they sometimes do it aint gonna leak or drop into the pan :D

Okay guys need some more help drained the oil and no sign of the rod in the oil pan. Tried sticking a wire through the drain and fishing it around to see if i would feel the rod but no luck. Any ideas of what to do next?

Wasn't planing on pulling the motor till I was sure this motor it was tip top and trouble free. Brother found this truck for me but ran it out of diesel on the way to his shop. This is were all the problems started and why i decided to change the fuel pump.

Have you tried to rap the pan with a rubber mallet to see if you can hear it bouncing around in there?

Also, try to bar the motor over manually.
