    Squeak in the front end

It was the ball joints. Got them replaced and all is good. :thumbs

    Quick help with wiring

If I wanted to pull the bulb I would've just done that, but that's not what I'm looking to do. Just curious if anybody is familiar with the wiring.

    Quick help with wiring

We're getting ready to take a 2500 mile trip and I'm trying to hook up a dome override light similar to what's found in GM products, the kind where you can open up the doors and the dome lights will not come on. We've got little kids that always get woken up at night when I open the doors...

Want to purchase a 2004 SD "Need Advise"

Welcome to SDD, Pinnacle. The 2003 model years were the most troublesome, so a 2004 SHOULD be okay--but there are never any guarantees. As for the 4WD switch, you can switch from 2H to 4H while you're driving, you've just got to be under 50-55 MPH and not applying any gas (ie: coasting)...

Thanks all, it has been grand.

Richard, sorry to hear that--truly. God bless. Bruce

    Squeak in the front end

Too big a job for me. Took to dealer and all four ball joints are bad. $1375 total. Ouch. Here's my question, though, dumb as it may be: can ball joints be lubed? I didn't see a grease zerk near them but the service tech said they were all dried up. Makes me think I caused this.

    Rear stabilizers

Not to be different, but I use a 24V Black and Decker drill to raise and lower my stabalizers. Cranking is for newbies.:tounge

    Squeak in the front end

What was your cost to replace them--parts and labor? Did you do it yourself? I swapped out the steering stabilizer last night to no avail. Squeek is still there.

    Squeak in the front end

Thanks. I just picked up a new shock at Advance Auto tonight for about $40. Even if the shock isn't the problem, the one I have on there is rusted since the boot slipped off during the winter. I had a buddy turn the wheel while I was laying under the truck and it's coming from either the...

    Squeak in the front end

Actually it happens only when the wheels are turning--turning as in left to right not as in rotating, so I don't think it could be anything in the wheel itself. I'll try the steering stabilizer and then the ball joints. They can't be that expensive, right??

Wish somebody would've told me it was a two man job before I did mine!

    Squeak in the front end

Must be my trucks time of the month... It developed a squeak in the right front on Saturday whenever I turn the steering wheel. At first I thought it was the steering damper, but it doesn't seem to be the source of the noise--the noise sounds like metal on metal screeching. Anyhow, what...

Shudder when accelerating uphill on curve

The only thing I see with the angle--uphill, downhill, flat--is the stress on the rear end. I'd think that if I'm towing a load up a hill, that's putting more stress on the whole driveline versus going down a hill or driving on flat ground while coasting.

I need help on my exhaust install. . .

I had a bear of a time getting my stock down pipe off as well. I took a saw to it in a couple different places so that I was able to twist it out. Took quite a while to do, but after the right amount of cuts (and cutting off the wrapping) it came out. On a positive note, the new one will go...

best way to paint bare metal?

I just picked up a custom roof rack from a fabricator in Arizona. Great rack, fits the X perfectly, but I need to know the best way to finish it off--it's bare metal right now. I don't want to get it powdercoated because of the cost even though this would probably be the best method. Prime and...

    This will make you sick.

I can just see the wires for aftermarket lights or something getting cut and never repaired when they pull the cab off, let alone a bypass oil filter or something that isn't a factory Ford part. Anybody ever heard of them pulling an Excursion body off of the frame? You'd think if engine work...

Shudder when accelerating uphill on curve

Update: I added some more to the rear end and thus far its done nothing. Put it in about 200 miles ago. I only get the shudder when I'm accelerating, whether up a hill or around a tight corner--but it's much more noticeable going up a hill. One other thing: when the mechanics were looking at...

    02 X 7.3--tranny out, need recommendation!

He already had the tranny replaced. Not sure if that was the problem or not, but what's done is done. He was in a bind for time and the stealership was convinced it was the tranny. Thanks for all the input! Bruce

Shudder when accelerating uphill on curve

Sorry guys, been out of the net this week. Had the truck into the dealership while I was on a bizniss trip and they said it was the clutches in the rear end that are starting to go. My concern is that they'd go out on me and leave me stranded while out with our travel trailer. Service guy said...

Shudder when accelerating uphill on curve

Need a little advice before heading in for service-- I'm getting a shudder in the rear end when accelerating up a steeper hill on curves...sounds pretty specific, but it doesn't do it accelerating up a hill on a straight road. I'm thinking something in the rear end given the whole curve...

    02 X 7.3--tranny out, need recommendation!

My buddy has a 02 X with the 7.3 and auto tranny with 102K miles. It quit "going" the other day. Had it towed to the dealership and they told him today it was the transmission and would cost $3200 to replace. The dealership he had it towed to (due to location) is the dealership that I had...

How much warm up time is needed in cold weather?

Believe me, I thought of that, but if you've ever been to West Point at the academy, you'd chuckle at the sight of that! I'd probably need about 1/4 mile of extension cord, and it'd be draped over a cliff or something. I was wondering if any gadgets out there will start the truck remotely...

    Should ART Rotors warp?

I actually bedded them when I installed them, just like the book said to do. But, I'll do it again if it means not pulling the brakes off in this weather. Thanks for the info, and I'll keep you posted if it worked.

How much warm up time is needed in cold weather?

When the truck is plugged in, it seems ready to drive after about 30 seconds of warming up. When not plugged in, at work for example, I need to let it idle for about 5 minutes before it doesn't sound a bit rough. It's all uphill from work to home, so I tend to let it warm up a bit more than if I...
