    Happy Birthday Tail_Gunner

Thanks for the happy birthday wishes. I do look in on occasion to see what folks are up to. Mrs TG and my dad took me out to Red Lobster for a big lunch before I had to go to work. Once at work, I sure wanted to turn around and go home for a nap. It was rough the first couple of hours LOL.

    Anything exciting going on?

I gave away my baby girl about 2 weeks ago. (Sorry about the pic laying on its side. It happened during the file upload and I haven't yet figured out how to fix it.) And had a deer run in front of me the very next day.:rant Body shop bill was about $2000. p.s. and my new son-in-law...

    Air force oops

We landed a B-52 at Billings, Montana in 1990. My pilot's parents live in Laurel near Billings. So it was sort of a 'hometown lad does good' thing. Landing there was on purpose for an airshow they were having. It was a tight squeeze. We had to transfer fuel to get the tip gear wheels up off...

    broken leaf springs

The left rear spring leafs were breaking on my old 99 F-250. I towed a lot and had an exhaust brake. The riser blocks were the factory ones. I went to a local spring shop and they gave me the option of factory style IIRC 5 leaf springs or a heavier duty 7 leaf type. Since I towed about 80% of...

    Tail_Gunner's howz it goin'.

We're under a winter storm warning for the next 3 nights straight. They're saying maybe a foot of the real wet heavy stuff which I really hate. Did I mention that I think Al Gore is a moron?

    Tail_Gunner's howz it goin'.

Thanks everyone. There are more drawers obviously in the toolbox. But I didn't have pics of the others. I suppose I should get some if not for any other reason, the insurance company. I imagine at some time in the future, a certain young man is going to think I am the coolest grandpa on...

    Tail_Gunner's howz it goin'.

I don't post as much as I used to here, even though I still check in from time to time. Things have been going alright for me and Mrs TG lately. Job's going good, just got a raise on my 2nd anniversary. Last November, my dad's fiance passed. They were together for about 20 years. That let a...

    Ball joint replacement question

I'll start a TG update thread in the general stuff/lounge. Don't want to look like I'm hi-jacking the thread.

    Ball joint replacement question

Back when I had to replace the ball joints on my 99, I too got estimates from local shops. The labor was in the low to mid hundreds of $$$$ range. Labor alone was more than parts. After thinking about it, I said screw that and bought a simple 12 ton press from Harbor Freight and did the job...

    Big Drop in Fuel Mileage

Did you check your brake caliper slide pins? Back in the day when I still had my F-250, I had a dragging rear brake and pulled both the rear brakes off for inspection. It turned out that on the dragging brake, the slide pins on the calipers were seized. I tried to get them loose, but no luck...

    Stancor GPR

About 3 years ago when I still had my early 99, I replaced the failing OEM GPR with the Stancor relay. It made a HUGE difference in how well the truck started on a cold morning. I'm sure you'll be very glad you made that move too.

After a little more looking, it resmbles a tail gun turret on the later production B-17's:

    hey Tail_gunner

I've seen that pic before, still haven't quite figured out what post WWII bomber had that tail gun turret that got photo-shopped to the beer truck. B-29 maybe??:dunno

We survived the end of the wrold

By union contract at work, I'm still entitled to two more vacation days for the the year. I told the Mayans they couldn't end the world before I burned those last two vacation days. :) BTW: Merry Christmas everybody!!

Question 7.3 sounds like somebody hitting it with a hammer is this injector knock

Hook a scanner or something capable of doing an injector contribution test. Run the test, it'll turn off each injector one at a time. If the noise goes away momentarily, you've confirmed a bad injector as well as which one it is.

    Question Intercooler boots

There are places on-line where you can get connector boots by size dimensions. That's where I found the intake boots when I put in the larger 99.5 intake covers on my early 99 and still needed to hook them up to the early 99 "Y" plenum.

    Question Belt Tensioner

If you have over 226,000 miles on the tensioner, replace it. The biggest area of concern with them isn't the pulley bearing, it's the pivot bushing. Over time the pivot bushing goes bad and the pivot gets VERY SLOPPY AND LOOSE. That causes the tenioner pulley to go out of square with the...

    Fuel mileage. Whats normal?

I was getting 16 to 18 highway with my old 99. Check your doughnut gaskets on the up pipes for leaks. Soot streaks coming out between the babies butt "Y" collector and the top end of the up pipes are indications of a leak. It is often overlooked as a cause for lack of power and mileage.

White smoke when starting in cold.

Consider replacing the glow plug relay. When I had my 7.3, I was having some starting issues. You can read about it here: NEW GLOW PLUG RELAY

    need some injector help.

You might have a problem with air in the fuel. The fuel injectors will get noisey if air is in the fuel. Typically one area where the air gets in, is through the slip on connectors in the fuel line between the tank and the fuel pump mounted on the frame under the driver's seat. A fix is to...

New up pipes, turbo, wastegate controller and problems

The name of it escapes me right now, but do you still have the valve in the turbine outlet where the downpipe connects to the turbo? If you do still have it and the valve is not open all the way it'll cause a high EGT's and a loss of power too.

    TS Performance

I tried 2 places before I went to Bill @ PHP. He was the first guy that got it running right and without any issues. Can't go wrong with him.

New up pipes, turbo, wastegate controller and problems

Sounds to me like either a boost leak or a drive pressure leak. There is a way to check for boost leaks. Dieselsite at one time had a test fitting you could get that allowed you to pressurize the intake system from the turbo inlet to the cylinder heads. You would pressurize the intake...
