driver side lower is shot. stealer wants $600+ for one side. as most of us know, i work at a rental store (free usage). i can get a ball joint press, ball joint for $30 a piece. just need to know how much of a pita this will be? also need to know size of axle nut socket i need to take from work?

this is starting to be a thorn in my side. i was told by stealer that w/ a 2 degree steering angle they pound the piss out of the ball joints. they realized this and made a change to a 5-6 degree angle in about 05.....

I can't help with the socket, but changing them out is not a big job since you access to all the right tools.

600.00 for ball joints sound rediculously high.

the powerstrokeshop has the MOOG replacements with the zirk fittings for less than that I believe.

600 bucks sounds about average...some here, have paid as much
as 800 or 900...PER SIDE !

its a fairly easy job...1st side took me more than 4hrs (only cause
i was being STUPID when pressing out the ball joints)...the 2nd
side took me less about an hour TOPS.

I borrowed the press from autozone...for FREE.

get grease-able replacements...moog, spicer, auto-zone...they have
a life-time gauarantee (try to get that from the dealer)

i dont know what that dealer is talking about...angle change in 05...
the ENTIRE front END changed in 05 !

make sure youre shocks and sway bar are all in good shape...they
can contribute to the problem...and remember the front end of these
diesels are HEAVY HEAVY <which probably does contribute to the
problem some.>

I just put Spicer in mine, they are non greaseable but have a lifetime warrentee. Labour and parts for both upper and lower, BOTH sides came to about $700. Took longer then expected because something, im not entirely sure what was seized right up and had to be carefully forced apart, the hub I belive but im not positve. Hopefully these will last another 30 or 40,000 km!

$600 a side is way out of site. I had mine done and with moog servicable [grease fittings] ball joints, 1 new wheel bearing, all new seals and an alignment is was under a grand.

I went back and pulled my invoice from when I had mine done.

Parts (upper & lower for both sides) = 268.36
Labor = 396.00
Supplies = 2.38
Tax = 21.47
Total = 688.21

This amount was for both sides.

And your dealer wants 600.00 plus for only that one side? That is armed robbery red IMO!

I think they are trying to get back at you for all the warranty work your truck casued them.

and you can buy the parts at just about any local parts house....
makes it easier to get replacements (lifetime warranted parts) !

I didnt do the hub seal (50 bucks)...although i WOULD recommend
that you do the seals...i did the yellow hub o-rings, axle dust shield
and ball joints....and i dont think i had 100 bucks (in parts) per side

The balljoints take about 2 hrs. a side for your first time. What axle nut socket once you get the hub off you use snap ring pliers and then are able to take the wheel bearing off. Just about everything can be gotten with a 13/16 socket. If I remember correctly the only thing that doesn't are the ball joint nuts them selves, and I think the lower one uses a 32mm socket. Tip take off wheel bearing and then pull the axleshaft out.
