I go 5,000 miles between oil/filter changes. They installed a new EGR cooler and now they can't figure out something, so they are going to replace the PCM (computer). Oil in diesels gets dirtier quicker than in gas rigs. My KW with a 2 stroke diesel would foul up the oil very fast. And that took 15 gallons of oil.

Hey Dave;

How long in between oil changes did you go? The recommended 7500 miles?
When I changed my oil the other day at 5,000 miles between changes, the oil looked very used.

you cant go by looks...ive been changing mine at 5k intervals and
ive been getting blackstone reports on every single change (ive missed
maybe 3 TOPS since ive owned the truck)...in EVERY case (not including
the 1st change) the oil could have run longer.

ive had ONE oil change were the flash point fell a little low but was
still w/in spec.

winter idling (and i dont do a lot of idling) and wet stacking was
evident when i lived in virginia 2 winters ago but even THEN the oil
could have gone more than the 5k that it did.

hey dave-

sorry to hear of the bad news (stories)...:doh: :sorry

fwiw: they told me my pcm needed changing too (but they were trying to fix another issue.

keep us posted as always!!!

all this talk of oil coolers makes me wonder about mine. but other than crappy mileage (still) - i got no complaints. heck i seem to have now more blue smoke at start and can get it to puke black smoke by just stepping on the pedal. neat trick when i want to get people to slow down or back off...:guns: beware of the black cloud....

Well I just got it home and it seems to run good. I will try it out later. The dealer said that the EGR plug had 2 of the wires reversed and that was causing the PCM to act weird. They changed the PCM and and gave my the truck back. I don't know about the EGR wires as I haven't messed with them.
