I went to start my truck last Thursday and it started to run rough and fast. I shut it off and restarted it and it did the same thing. I drove it to work and it seemed to run fine when it got up to operating temperature. I was in no hurry to get it into Ford, so I left town last weekend. When I got back I tried to take it in on Monday and they said that they can't look at it until Wednesday. SO I took it in on Wednesday (yesterday). The Service Writer called me today and said that my EGR cooler was leaking water and it needed to be changed out. They will keep it for one more day to see if the head gaskets are holding. I hope they are good. So if any of you guys have a rough, fast start, it is the EGR.

Coolant filter has been on the truck for about 2 + years now. What are you getting at with that Oil Cooler flow comment?

theres some speculation that oil coolers are plugging...and that its causeing the egr to have reduced coolant flow...and there for additional heat...

again its just speculation from what i can tell...

the only oil coolers ive ever seen circulate OIL....apparently the 6.0l
uses coolant !

Yes, the 6.0 uses a water cooler for the EGR, and that is why I asked you that question. The dealer was wondering if the head gaskets had blown, but they have to test that tomorrow.

some techs have found plugged oil coolers...some kinda sludged up
crud...and since the egr cooler IS in the flow AFTER the oil cooler
it seems reasonable that reduced coolant flow THRU the oil cooler
WOULD reduce the cooling in the egr cooler (potentially causing
leaks or cracks...from the heat).

it seems like a bizarre set up...to cool oil at least....most run
the oil thru a simple finned <independant> cooler...but again
i wasnt involved in the design of this set up...as i tell my customers...
i didnt get invited to that meeting so i cant tell you WHY they
did that...

Not too crazy there bushpilot, IHC has been running coolant cooled oil coolers for years on the bigger engines, like the DT466 and others. May not cool as good as the finned type, but effective none the less.

If your not running a tuner and the truck hasn't been baked chances are the head gaskets are o.k. I just did the EGR cooler and it wasn't cheap. How many miles you have on her?

dave, i feel your pain, 3 times as a matter of fact.

once bone stock, and two more times with the current mods i have done.

mines waiting at the dealer right now, to install new head studs, head gaskets, etc.

hope it gets fixed soon.
