but it doesnt take MUCH....sand, water (drops) will
rip the edges off the fins, theyll become damaged,
outta balance (remember were talkin' 25k rpm +)

balance is critical...its hard to tell
which may have gone 1st...the
bearings or the fins...one could take
out the other <quickly>

that makes good sense bush.
never thought about the little particles that may
flow thru. with carnage like this, I was thinking big stuff.

Hey Bama;

I know this is not what you want to see happening to your PSD. I hope you find the cause of the problem, and get it fixed soon.

:sorry

that is kinda what i was telling him...(and the missing socket too!!):sly

but if the fins are destroyed shouldn't the housing be trashed too?

upon further review of the pix, it looks like the housing is 'fine' - which begs this question: metal failure itself??? thoughts anyone

kleetus, i think what you may be seeing is 'oil' from blow by...i saw that too...

From what I can see in the pictures, it doesn't look as if the compressor wheel has been rubbing on the housing, which would rule out bearings being bad. If it had been rubbing there will be alot of real fine aluminum in the piping to the intercooler especially at the joints.

Truck is at the dealership and the new diesel tech that just moved down here from Flint, MI is gonna be working on it.

He said he would have the truck back to me later today (if the turbo gets on in here).

He seems very knowledgable and is a nice guy.

He truely believes that the bearing on the impeller just went south, but would be able to tell more once the turbo is off and he can see in the housing.

With somewhat a young truck what would cause the bearings to go? Wrong choice of Motor Oil(Dino or synth) if it is indeed lubed by the motor oil?

Does the 6.0L turbo bearings have a high failure rate?

is that the original STOCK turbo ?

This was the second turbo on the truck.

The original lasted to 137,000 miles.

The second made it to 151,000 miles, but I think it last until around
147,000 :dunno (thats when I got the truck back from the head
gasket job.) it made a high whine sound when I got it back.

I just thought it was the sound the fuel system was making.

Ignorance on my part I guess for not having it checked out sooner.

If I would have checked it out when I first noticed it or even 3 months ago,
it would be covered under the 12/12
